The Uses of Persian in Imperial China: The Translation Practices of the Great Ming
Year: 2019
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: Persian was used at the Ming court for tributary communications with Hami, Turfan, Samarqand, Herat and other Central Asian countries, with Tibet, and with countries along the sea route to Calicut and Hormuz. It was used alongside Chinese and other languages of those countries in tributary letters, edicts and petitions, stele inscriptions and other documents. A Persian college was one of ten language translating colleges established in the Hanlin Academy to train officers for translating and other duties within the court.
