Crystal growth of perovskite chalcogenide BaZrS$_3$ and Ruddlesden-Popper phase Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$

Year: 2019
Type: preprint
Abstract: BaZrS$_3$ and Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$ crystals were successfully grown with flux method using BaCl$_2$ flux. Rocking curves of the crystals show a full-width-at-half-maximum of 0.011$^\circ$ for BaZrS$_3$ and 0.027$^\circ$ for Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$, respectively. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for BaZrS$_3$ showed space group of $Pnma$ with lattice constants of $a$ = 7.056 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$, $b$ = 9.962 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$, $c$ = 6.996 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ at 100 K. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$ showed space group of $P4_2/mnm$ with lattice constants of $a$ = 7.071 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$, $b$ = 7.071 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$, $c$ = 25.418 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ at 100 K. Scanning transmission electron microscopy images with (010) zone axis for BaZrS$_3$ and (110) zone axis for Ba$_3$Zr$_2$S$_7$, and corresponding selected area electron diffraction patterns also indicate high crystallinity of the grown crystals. Octahedra tilting angles along all three axes are extracted by analysing the torsion angle in the corner-sharing octahedra network.
