Explanation, Falsifiability, and Rule-following

Year: 1968
Type: report
Abstract: Much has been written and said about the empirical character of psychology and other sciences. Little has been said about the non-empirical aspects. The present paper deals with the question of how what is empirical goes together with what is non-empirical in a science such as physics or psychology. Since a topic of this sort cannot be dealt with in depth in a brief presentation, I shall give a brief review and illustration of a recently developed formulation in which rule-following replaces truth-seeking as the central concept for scientific thinking and procedure.
