Securing the Connected Car : Application Code Matters

Year: 2018
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The development of embedded software for automotive applications has seen dramatic changes in recent years. Difficulties with uncontrolled, software induced acceleration in Toyota’s Prius models and surrounding legal issues. The rise of ISO 26262 and the disruption to development practices in its wake. A near exponential rise in embedded software content, and corresponding increases in software engineering complexity. And now, the “connected car” is falling under the spotlight with its vulnerability to attack from malicious hackers being demonstrated in models from a range of manufacturers. This will outline the relationship between automotive software systems architecture, domain separation, and application software. It will assert that no single technology amongst these offers a “silver bullet” to guarantee security, and that no connected system is ever going to be both useful and absolutely impenetrable. It makes sense to protect it proportionately to the level of risk involved if it were to be compromised, and that means applying multiple levels of security so that if one level fails, others are standing guard.
