Engineering and Analysis of a Defined Mixed Culture of Pseudomonas putida and Synechococcus elongatus for Bioplastic Production

Abstract: In this work, a defined mixed culture of the sucrose secreting cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus cscB and Pseudomonas putida EM178 was systematically engineered. P. putida was first genetically modified to be able to grow on sucrose as a carbon source by integration of the csc gene cluster from E. coli W or Pseudomonas protegens Pf-5. Finally, a mixed culture of S. elongatus cscB and the new P. putida strain was set up for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates in a photobioreactor.
