Survey of Configuration Design Approaches: A Focus on Design of Complex Industrial Manufacturing Systems
Year: 2019
Type: article
Abstract: Configuration design provides designers with a quick and cost-efficient way to develop new products. However, due to the initial complexity of industrial manufacturing systems, the number of alternative configurations from which designers select the most suitable one is too large. Considering the three main tasks relating to configuration design (i.e., modularisation, representation and evaluation), the authors review current configuration design approaches for the complex systems. Then, the authors point out there exists a gap between the representation task and evaluation task. Finally, a method which can improve the configuration design of industrial manufacturing systems is proposed.
