The differences in occurrence and recorded times of care delivery events as documented in electronic health records

Abstract: Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems can serve as rich data sources to examine clinical workflow. We extracted event logs for every encounter that took place in an academic hospital emergency department and its satellite urgent care sites in 2013. We identified delays between the occurrence and the recorded times of care delivery activities. Workflow researchers should consider these delays to ensure event sequences are captured accurately when using EHR systems as a data source.
