Year: 2019
Type: article
Abstract: By the early ninth century, taking responsibility for aseries\nof social, religious and political transformations had become\nan integral part of running the Carolingian empire. This book\ntakes a fresh look at these transformations during the\noptimistic first decades of the ninth century. Extrapolating\nfrom a series of detailed case studies rather than presenting\na new grand narrative, it offers new interpretations of\ncontemporary theories of personal improvement and\ninstitutional reforms, and shows the self-awareness of its main instigators as they pondered what it meant to be a\ngood Christian in a good Christian empire.
