Abstract: The issue of intermodal transport is an important matter for the integration of transport between different modes of transport. The specificity of intermodal transport loading units requires the search for innovative transport technologies to make transport more efficient. The article presents the systematics of knowledge in the field of intermodal transport and transport systems determined by the type of intermodal loading unit. In addition, the transhipment terminal, which plays an essential role in intermodal transport in the integration of different modes of transport, has been characterized. Technical and technological characteristics of selected innovative transport systems in intermodal transport, determined by the type of intermodal loading units, are also presented. The comparison of these systems was made with regard to technical and economic parameters.
