Aggregation-Induced Emission of Barbituric Acid Derivatives with different Alkyl Substituents and the Sensing Performance for Detecting Nitroaromatic Explosives

Type: article
Abstract: Six D-π-A barbituric acid derivatives with different alkyl substituents, which exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties, were synthesized. It is well explained by molecular dynamics simulation that the hydrophobic interaction by the alkyl substituents on the N-atom of carbazole, as well as the intermolecular electrostatic attraction between the carbazole and the barbituric acid moieties, work together to form the aggregates of the compounds and result in the strong AIE effect. CB-5 shows the highest AIE index of 49. For CB-5, the hydrophobic interaction of the hexyl group on the N-atom plays the main role in limiting the nonradiative transition of excitons. The aggregates of CB-5 was used to detect the 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in aqueous media, exhibiting a maximum quenching constant of 3.1×105M-1. A paper sensor based on CB-5 shows sensitive response to both the TNT vapor and TNT solution in THF, implying CB-5 may be a good candidate for detecting TNT.
