Abstract: 4 Scale of the problem• 26-35% GP consultations with patients suffering MUS (Barsky;Borus, 1995) • Comprise 50% of medical outpatient appointments and 5-10% of in-patient care, with limited evidence of benefit• 10 of most common problems account for 40% of all visits, but GPs can identify a biological cause for the concern in only 26% (i.e.14% of the 10 most common symptoms MUS) (Nimnuan, 2001) • Therefore we know MUS are very common world-wide, accounting for as many as 1 in 5 new GP consultations in primary care (Bridges;Goldberg, 1985)
