Abstract: An investigation finds that in free-surface plunging jets, shear layer vortices form right below the free surface, then develop and disintegrate faster than vortices in canonical free jets. This leads to shorter potential cores, faster decay of the mean centerline velocity, and enhanced liquid entrainment from the ambient.
