Internationalization of higher education: nine misconceptions

Year: 2011
Type: article
Abstract: Mainstreaming of internationalisation assumes a more integral process-based approach to internationalisation. Still there is a predominantly activity-oriented or even instrumental approach towards internationalisation. In this article, nine misconceptions are described, whereby internationalisation is regarded as synonymous with a specific programmatic or organisational strategy to promote internationalisation. These misconceptions are: (1) education in the English language; (2) studying or staying abroad; (3) internationalisation is synonymous with providing training based on international content or connotation; (4) having many international students equals internationalisation; (5) few international students guarantees success; (6) there is no need to test intercultural and international competencies; (7) the more partnerships, the more the success of internationalisation; (8) that higher education is international by nature; and (9) internationalisation as a precise goal.
