P1‐351: Cognitively Impaired Brain Health Registry Participants’ Attitudes About the Value of Amyloid Pet Results

Year: 2019
Type: article
Abstract: Patients seeking cognitive evaluation want results from their amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) scan (Vanderschaeghe et al., 2017). Patient-reported motivations include the desire to receive a definitive diagnosis and to better understand the cause of cognitive impairment (Lingler et al., 2018, Grill et al., 2017). This study aimed to evaluate attitudes about the value of amyloid PET results in patients with diagnostically uncertain mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Over 18,000 Imaging Dementia – Evidence for Amyloid Scanning (IDEAS) study participants underwent amyloid PET imaging, then received their PET result (Rabinovici, et al. 2015). IDEAS participants were later recruited for the Brain Health Registry (BHR) (Weiner et al., 2018) and 856 enrolled. We analyzed data from 452 participants that completed an online, self-report questionnaire. Table 2 summarizes participants’ attitudes about the utility of amyloid PET results. A majority (61.1%) agreed that receiving results were helpful in understanding their cognitive impairment, while 31.0% felt neutral, and 8.0% disagreed. A much greater percent of amyloid positive participants agreed receiving results were helpful (70.7%), compared to amyloid negative participants (46.4%, p< 0.0001). In contrast, a larger portion of amyloid negative participants felt neutral about results (40.2%) or disagreed (13.4%), versus amyloid positive participants (24.9%, 4.4%, p< 0.05). A larger percent of females disagreed about results utility (11.2%), compared to males (5.3%, p=0.0213). There were no differences in diagnostic group (MCI versus dementia), education, or race and ethnicity of participants who agreed versus disagreed that disclosure of amyloid PET results was helpful (all p>0.10).
