Abstract: We recently established the feasibility of intubation and initiating ventilation prior to umbilical cord clamping (UCC) for neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).The objective of the present study was to assess the maternal experience of this approach. This was a mixed-methods ancillary study of a pilot feasibility single-arm trial of intubation and ventilation prior to UCC among neonates with CDH. 1 A multiple choice questionnaire was administered to mothers within 1 month after delivery.Mothers were invited to participate in an open-ended interview.Survey questions were adapted from a study of parental experiences of resuscitation before UCC in preterm neonates.2 Interview transcripts were imported into ATLAS.tiV.7 and analysed using coding and analytical memos by a qualitative researcher.Analytical notes, query tools, code reports and network views were developed to highlight key themes and relationships. We surveyed 15 mothers of enrolled neonates and conducted eight semistructured key informant interviews. Most participants were white (73%) and multiparous (67%).Eleven mothers underwent caesarean section and could not watch intubation. Most mothers reported positive experiences with intubation prior to UCC and did not report serious negative emotional after-effects (figure 1).Key themes from semistructured interviews included (1)
