Abstract: Developing students' lifelong learning competence is an essential objective of higher education institutions. Information\nliteracy skills are a key component of lifelong learning and they clearly contribute to its achievement. Because of this, the main objective of this study is to compare the information literacy skills of first-year undergraduate students of education with the ones in the final year in order to determine some educational needs and support recommendations for the integration of information literacy into academic programmes. Data were collected using a survey -Questionnaire on Information\nLiteracy Skills (GESTINF)- with multiple-choice questions targeting a variety of information literacy skills. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 824 students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of the University of Oviedo. The results show that a significant number of students have limited knowledge, or no knowledge at all, of basic elements characterizing the information research process. Consequently, this deficiency in information literacy skills has a negative mpact on academic performance and also as regards personal and professional development.
