Sodium Excretion and Cardiovascular Outcomes in African American Patients With CKD: Findings From the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension
Year: 2019
Type: article
Abstract: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are advised to reduce sodium intake, but some studies show higher risks for death and cardiovascular events at lower levels of sodium intake.1-3 However, many previous studies used a single 24-hour urine collection to estimate sodium intake,4 and studies in CKD were conducted in relatively homogenous European or Australian cohorts.3,5-8 In contrast, the African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK) was comprised of self-identified African Americans with significant CKD and ascertained serial 24-hour urine collections.
