Abstract: "The Politics of Humiliation details the history of humiliation as a political tool and an instrument of social subordination. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the book identifies striking similarities in the forms and uses of humiliation over a span of 250 years between radically different contexts, from the USA to China to Europe. The book analyses how various political systems use or refrain from using humiliation and the reasons why. In its discussion of Western liberal societies, it illustrates how, as humiliation fell out of favour as a form of official state punishment, it came to appear more frequently in social contexts"--
