Abstract: This work shows strong coupling of lattices with electronic degrees of freedom in double perovskite Nd${}_{2}$ZnIrO${}_{6}$ via crystal-field excitations. The authors uncover the role of phononic degrees of freedom in understanding the quantum magnetic ground state of these systems.
