Abstract: More than 2 years before presenting to our clinic for a second opinion, this 28-year-old graduate student was hospitalized in Fermo, Italy with right ear erythema and necrotic ulcerations. He had been in Mexico 9 months before this hospitalization. He was treated initially with antibacterial antibiotics and corticosteroids for 2 months, with subsequent worsening (Figure 1, panel A). A biopsy was then performed in Rome and the results were consistent with cutaneous leishmaniasis; speciation demonstrated Leishmania mexicana.
