Dear Student Editors, We Need Your Help

Year: 2016
Type: article
Abstract: At the 2016 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting, there was a discussion group on diversity in legal scholarship. The discussion group, “Increasing Author Diversity in Legal Scholarship: Individual and Institutional Strategies,” created an opportunity for law faculty to discuss why there is a lack of author diversity in legal scholarship, why author diversity is important, and how to define author diversity, and to brainstorm ideas for effecting change. As one of the standing-room-only attendees at the discussion group, I listened to colleagues and scholars as they shared their experiences and I reflected on my own experiences. I realized that the discussion was missing a critical voice: that of the student editors. With that in mind, this essay combines the discussion group’s conversation with existing research about the lack of diversity in legal scholarship and acknowledges a need for student editors’ help in effecting change. In particular, this essay (styled as a letter to student editors) offers nine ways to work toward and increase diversity in legal scholarship.
