Nutritional perspective of polycystic ovarian syndrome: A review study

Year: 2020
Type: article
Abstract: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), an endocrine abnormality, causes a dysfunction of reproductive and metabolic activities in women of the reproductive age group. In this phase, the risk of cardiovascular disease, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, hypertension, and endometrial cancer, as well as obesity and insulin resistance, is increased. Researchers are still trying to find the main cause of PCOS, although some factors such as sedentary lifestyle, stress, obesity, and micronutrient deficiency play an important role to understand the biological mechanism of this disease. Some specific problems caused by PCOS such as hyperinsulinemia, menstrual irregularity, and metabolic dysfunction can be cured by dietary modifications viz. a low-calorie, low fat, and high fiber diet that will help to maintain ideal body weight. Some other dietary strategies such as reducing consumption of high glycemic index diet, trans fat, saturated fat, white sugar, and refined flour also helps to improve abnormalities (Luteinizing hormne, Follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and so on) associated with PCOS. Researches reveal that about 5% reduction in body weight can help to improve insulin level, androgen level, and menstrual dysfunction in obese women suffering from PCOS.
