Achieving A Certain Major Achievement During Uncertain Times

Year: 2020
Type: article
Abstract: Since our last issue, so much has changed in the world. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed contemporary civilization, and the lasting impact is still to be seen. For JAMIA Open, we are fortunate to have the steadfast support of Oxford University Press (OUP) that has ensured a seamless transition during the conversion to remote working in alignment with international guidelines for physical distancing. OUP has organized a collection of selected articles and publications from an array of sources: https://academic.oup.com/journals/pages/coronavirus JAMIA Open met a major milestone earlier this year: all articles are now indexed in PubMedCentral (PMC). PMC indexing also means that articles are now discoverable from PubMed, which I hope will increase the readership and interest in JAMIA Open. I invite you to browse all articles published to data in PMC: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/journals/3775/ The PMC collection of JAMIA Open publications is an impressive set of articles, spanning the breadth of biomedical and health informatics. I ask each of you to find your favorite articles from the set and share them on your favorite social media platform, as well as share with your colleagues. As open access articles, all JAMIA Open articles are sharable in whatever format you prefer. Please also encourage your colleagues to submit their best work describing advances in biomedical and health informatics, with confidence that their articles will join other articles indexed in PMC and accessible from PubMed. With community-facing abstracts now being required for all accepted articles, our attention will be shifted to enabling interactive approaches for sharing source code associated with many of the methodological submissions. It is my expectation that this will further support reproducibility and improve the reader experience in interacting with methodological articles. Many of us are working remotely and expect to do for the coming weeks until the COVID-19 pandemic is dampened through physical distancing along with other public health approaches. Nonetheless, I have confidence that we will, as a community, have many informatics insights about how we supported the response to the COVID-19. The JAMIA Open editorial team looks forward to considering descriptions of informatics approaches and systems that were developed to support current and future clinical and public health needs to response to pandemics. In the meantime, I hope that you, your teams, and your families are minimally impacted by COVID-19.
