Abstract: The article analyzes the novel «Winter» (2018), written by a contemporary Scottish writer Ali Smith, whose works have not yet been sufficiently studied by Russian literary criticism. The main topic of the novel under discussion is the real and the illusory in the person’s worldview and their relationship with real world. This topic is presented through the themes of existential perspective. The author also skillfully uses various postmodernist techniques, the most productive being intertextuality, synthesis of the real and illusory within the picture of the world, literary play, and the author’s play with verb tenses. The main conclusion of the article: the line between the illusory and the real in the inner world of the Ali Smith’s characters is elusive, her characters cannot say for sure what is real and what is illusory / artificial, to what extent their world and they themselves are real. People who have not found their place in the real world seek to leave for their own illusory world, which includes more and more elements of virtual reality.
