Abstract: This work explores the effects of constant volume confinement on cavitation-induced ice nucleation by marrying fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and nucleation kinetics into a single approach. The authors find that confinement at even macroscopic volumes can suppress cavitation-induced nucleation from single microscale bubbles, suggesting that macroscale confinement may provide an effective method of suppressing this nucleation pathway in supercooled aqueous systems.
