Abstract: This paper demonstrates that assumptions of time independence in network growth are invalid. As a result, methods to estimate the future evolution of networks are likely to lead to misleading results. Given that network topology is driven by the underlying growth process of a network, this may in part explain the rarity of true scale-free networks in real data.
