Abstract: The ability to measure shared decision-making (SDM) is an important means to identify, understand, improve, incentivize, and reward patient-centred care. High-quality SDM measures often rely on patient-reported assessments of care experiences. Patient-reported measures are generally more efficient and pragmatic to collect than observer measures. Several patient-reported SDM measures exist and assess core aspects of the process of SDM itself or the impact of SDM on health-related outcomes. This chapter provides guidance for researchers and others interested in measuring SDM to help select a measure that meets the specific project’s needs and has evidence of strong psychometrics.
