Abstract: Crudely speaking, there are two main suggestions about teaching gifted and talented student: we can move them to a separate class section, or we can mix them with other students. Both options have pluses and minuses. In this paper, we formulate this problem in precise terms, we solve the corresponding mathematical optimization problem, and we come up with a somewhat unexpected optimal solution: mixing, but with an unusual twist.
