Social cohesion : contemporary theoretical perspectives on the study of social cohesion and social capital.
Year: 2010
Type: book
Abstract: In recent years, various scholars have devoted attention to the study of social cohesion and social capital in contemporary societies. There is no consensus however, on what these concepts could mean in the current cultural context. This volume brings together insights from some of the leading scholars on this topic. In the volume, social cohesion is defined as the absence of structural exclusion mechanisms, and the presence of social attitudes and the feeling of belonging among the population of a territory. Subsequently, this volumes presents various attempts to operationalize social cohesion and to use the concept in empirical research. These chapters demonstrates that ‘European’ and ‘American’ approaches to the study of social cohesion can effectively be combined in empirical research. This volume brings together the proceedings of the conference, organized on this theme in 2008 by the Royal Academy of Belgium.
