Abstract: American Document was one of the first major achievements in the career of the American choreographer Martha Graham.Produced in 1938, the dance was structured in episodes and employed procedures borrowed from minstrel shows and epic theater to present an overview of the main events in the history of the United States. From the analysis of a set of archival documents regarding this and other related dances, we seek to reveal the conditions of possibility for the emergence of the main techniques, forms and procedures of composition of American modern dance and its involvement with the Popular Front movement. Our research suggests an alliance between modern dance and the New York working class during the second half of the 1930s.We believe that the key role that this art of the movement performed in leftist culture during that period is directly linked to the desire to represent contemporary social groups and issues on stage and to the didactic experiences of organizing and rehearsing the collective political movement through dance.
