Abstract: Taking the brake off the immune system: Hypotheses, trials, tribulations, and the evolving discipline of clinical immunopharmacologyThe immuno-oncology discipline has arisen out of the development of the "personalized medicine" era, where drugs were discovered and developed to bind to specific targets integral to cell growth and division. In the tumour micro-environment, the dominant immunosuppressive influences enable cancer cells to evade normal immune surveillance.Defining the cellular and molecular basis of this "hiding from immune surveillance" has been a key scientific goal of biologists and immunologists. The scientific understanding of the interaction between immune effector cells and tumour tissue has led to the development of drugs that enhance the body's immune surveillance systems to promote malignant cell killing.
