Microbiome of the Unified Airway
Year: 2020
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The human microbiome influences airway mucosa in several ways, including downregulating inflammation or activating inflammatory cytokines that contribute to overall health or disease. Conversely, living conditions and common treatments used in airway diseases influence shifts in the microbiome. Our understanding of the role of the microbiome in complex microbe-host interactions in the unified airway is in its infancy, but some patterns have emerged: patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) have less sinonasal bacterial diversity detected, while patients with asthma have more diverse pulmonary bacterial communities. There are currently limited clinical data using molecular diagnostics and therapeutic probiotic regimens. There are no clear guidelines for using either, but there may be some benefit of using oral probiotics to influence the gut-airway axis and decrease the frequency and severity of upper respiratory tract infections (URIs).
