Launch of ACS ES&T Engineering and Redefining Environmental Engineering

Year: 2020
Type: editorial
Abstract: contributions in the field of environmental engineering. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce the journal and the strategy behind its launch. The primary mission of environmental engineering research is to understand and develop the air, water, and soil systems that "support the well-being of people and the planet in areas where the two intersect." 1 Environmental engineering research today addresses problems and issues that are increasingly complex and global in scale, such as climate change and its implications, shortages of critical resources such as fresh water and nutrients to grow food, indoor and outdoor air pollution and the inequities it creates, ubiquitous occurrence of persistent micropollutants and microplastics in natural waters, and emerging viruses and pathogens.Such challenges require highly innovative and cross-disciplinary solutions that involve diverse groups of researchers from disparate disciplines, where the engineering aspect of the solution cannot proceed without embracing and interfacing with these interlinking elements that exist outside of traditional engineering. In response to the broadening scope of environmental engineering research and the diversified communities working together to solve these complex environmental problems, ACS has established ACS ES&T Engineering (ES&TE) as a new publication medium not only to respond to this rising demand but to embrace and enable it.This new journal, as a member of the Environmental Science & Technology (ES&T) family of journals that also includes ES&T, ES&T Letters, and ACS ES&T Water, will meet the increasing needs of publishing high quality environmental research with a strong focus on the enabling role that environmental engineering plays in the effort. The title of this new journal has the word, "engineering" as a suffix to its ES&T root. What do we mean by engineering?Definitions can vary depending on the context, but in its broadest sense it can be described as "creating and designing objects, processes, and systems to meet human needs and to solve practical problems".2 In particular, environmental engineering's legacy traces back to the early efforts of developing municipal sanitary sewer systems, a critical component of urban infrastructure.Since then, environmental engineering has rapidly expanded to address more of the essential needs of humanity and the planetfrom the air we breathe and the water we drink to the soil with which we grow
