Type: article
Abstract: The use of dietary supplements by athletes is a common phenomenon, independent of the individualís level of involvement in the given sport. At present, manufacturers of supplements arenít obliged to present documentation concerning the safe use and efficiency of the given product before marketing it.However, ensuring the quality and safe use of dietary supplements is currently a problem, not only in Poland but throughout Europe. Therefore, more research studies need to be conducted on the assessment of the declared supplement composition, their safe use, and the efficiency of substances contained therein. This studyís objective was to assess the content of zinc, iron, manganese, sodium, and potassium in supplements used by athletes in Poland. The contents of the studied elements obtained through flame atomic absorption spectrometry were compared with the contents declared by the manufacturer. In the subsequent stage of the study, we assessed the extent to which the bioelements contained in the tested products covered the daily demands of human organisms. It was demonstrated that the bioelements declared by the manufacturers were found in the qualitative composition of the products. The determined zinc values coincided with or were slightly higher than their corresponding values claimed by the manufacturer. For iron and manganese, the declared content of the tested elements coincided with the declared amount for three of the six tested dietary supplements. In one product, the declared zinc value was 132.5% higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowance, while in another product, the iron content exceeded this value by 40%.
