Five Golden Rings to Measure Patient‐Centered Care in Rheumatology

Year: 2020
Type: review
Abstract: SDM.We included a measure of trust that covers the domain of empowerment and a measure of empathy that covers the domain of communication. This article presents a summary of easy-to-use tools to measure patient-centered care in rheumatology. We looked for tools validated in rheumatology populations. Our five selected tools encompass prioritized dimensions. However, they do not cover all dimensions, neither are we providing a comprehensive list of all possible tools.Tables 2 and 3 describe the practical applications and psychometric information for the measures.Appendix 1 presents detailed information about our selection process and summary information of other possible tools. We propose a first "starter set" of measures for clinicians, researchers, and decision-makers involved in implementing patient-centered care.We will describe the tools, their psychometric information, and their practical application in rheumatology. SURE (Sure of myself; Understand information; Risk-benefit ratio; Encouragement) DescriptionPurpose.SURE is a tool for clinicians to screen for decisional conflict (ie, patient uncertainty about decisions) at the end of a consultation (20). Content or domains.SURE was developed based on the 16-item Decisional Conflict Scale (20,27).It includes one question per core concept of the Ottawa Decision Support Framework: "feeling uncertain," "feeling informed," "feeling clear about values," and "feeling supported in decision-making" (20).The only concept of the Decisional Conflict Scale not included is "perceived effectiveness of the choice made" (20). Number of items. Four items. Response options/scale. Each item has a binary scale (yes/no).Recall period for items.A recall period is not reported. The tool is intended for use after a consultation. Cost to use. SURE is free to use for clinical and research purposes. How to obtain.SURE and its translations are accessible under the Decisional Conflict Scale section of the Ottawa Decision Aid website (https://decis ionaid.ohri.ca/eval_dcs.html). Practical application Method of administration.A clinician directly administers and interprets SURE.Developers proposed integration of the four questions within patient decision aids.Scoring.Each question solicits a dichotomous response: yes or no."Yes" gives 1 point, and "no" gives 0 points. The scores to each question are summed for a total of 4 points.* CARE = Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure; SDM = shared decision making; SDM-Q-9 = 9-item Shared Decision Making Questionnaire; SURE = Sure of myself; Understand information; Risk-benefit ratio; Encouragement; TiPS = Trust in Physician Scale.21514658, 2020, S10, Downloaded from https://acrjournals.onlinelibrary.
