Abstract: T he United States has been in the midst of an opi- oid abuse epidemic. In 2013, the New York City Emergency Department Discharge Opioid Prescribing Guidelines were released that included a recommendation to prescribe no more than a short course of opioids for acute pain, with most patients requiring no more than 3 days.1 In 2016, the CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain were released.2 Although most of the CDC recommendations were for patients with chronic pain, one of the 12 guidelines was relevant to acute pain and emergency medicine:When opioids are used for acute pain, clinicians should prescribe the lowest effective dose of immediate-release opioids and should prescribe no greater quantity than needed for the expected duration of pain severe enough to require opioids.Three days or less will often be sufficient; more than seven days will rarely be needed.
