Abstract: The study explains why and how Simplicius interprets Epictetus’ Manual, by relating its lexicon and statements to elements of Neoplatonic political philosophy. To achieve this, he employs lexical encounters with, or subtle literal allusions to, Platonic statements and discussions as a form of mediation. The main reasons for this mode of reading lie, firstly, in the complex order that, according to him, structures the progress of studies and minds (an order in which the message of the Stoic text and the political dimension of philosophical life are intertwined), and, secondly, in Damascius’ innovative interpretation of the message of the First Alcibiades. This study reveals the virtuosity with which Simplicius integrates such diverse teachings as those of Epictetus, Porphyry, Proclus and, in particular, Damascius.
