Fluid-dynamical analogue of nonlinear gravitational wave memory
Year: 2020
Type: preprint
Abstract: We consider the propagation of nonlinear sound waves in an irrotational and barotropic perfect liquid at rest. Starting from the Riemann wave equation of nonlinear acoustics, we derive wave equations for the effective spacetime-metric perturbations, and find an analogue of gravitational wave (GW) memory. In particular, we construct a counterpart of Christodolou's GW memory, for which the nonlinearity of the underlying spacetime medium is due to the inherent nonlinearity of the perfect liquid equations. For concreteness, we employ a box-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate, and provide an experimental protocol to observe the analogue of GW memory.
