The Influence of Organization Acquisition Experience on Acquisition Performance: A Behavioral Learning Perspective
Year: 1998
Type: preprint
Abstract: Drawing on work from behavioral learning theory in psychology, this study examines the influence of organizational acquisition experience. Consistent with this theory, which focuses on both the conditions preceding organization events as well as organizational responses, data from 449 acquisitions show (1) an overall U-shaped relationship between organizational acquisition experience and acquisition performance, and (2) that the more similar firm acquisitions are to their prior targets, the better that they perform. These findings indicated that the application of behavioral learning theory may enhance understanding of organizational experience effects.
