Abstract: Radiation oncology is enthusiastically exploring FLASH radiation therapy, which entails radiation delivered over an ultrashort interval (typically greater than 40 Gy/s over a few tenths of a second)1,2 with an estimated dose threshold for the effect at around 10 Gy.3 In preclinical studies, FLASH has been shown to reduce normal tissue side effects, potentially without sparing tumor killing, with postulated mechanisms of action related to free radical biology, oxygen depletion, and immune modulation.
