Introduction to the Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Special Issue

Year: 2021
Type: article
Abstract: Watch a video presentation of this article I am honored to guest edit this special issue of Clinical Liver Disease on all things nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) related. There is an urgent need to address the rising NAFLD epidemic. It is estimated that by 2030, more than 100 million adults in the United States alone will have NAFLD, and if we do not act, the incidence of decompensation, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death as a result of NAFLD are estimated to increase more than 130%. Thus, as providers, we must embrace the challenge of managing our patients without the assistance of FDA-approved medications through an improved understanding of its natural history, comorbid illnesses including cancer, key metabolic pathways, and lifestyle and dietary interventions. The NAFLD field has benefitted from a tremendous surge in research and pharmaceutical interest, and thus providers must also remain up to date with rapidly changing guidelines from major societies. In this issue, we are excited to have compiled a little something for everyone to try to meet these challenges. Through seven articles written by experts in the field, the series examines what is known about NAFLD and its association with cancer and cardiovascular disease, the influence of the microbiome, implications of sarcopenia and frailty on liver transplantation, metabolic insights into the pathogenesis and treatments for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and finally, an important update on guidelines and guidance documents. We hope this issue provides a foundation for clinicians and researchers to better diagnose, treat, and confront the epidemic of NAFLD.
