Cultures of remembrance, cultures of forgetting
Year: 2021

Abstract: This paper discusses the role of the past in later Danubian cultures, exemplified by references to traces of LBK settlements, which were visible for a long time. Two regions, Rhineland and Kuyavia, are compared by conducting analyses of spatial relationships of the LBK and post-LBK at macro- and microregional levels. The post-LBK development followed different trajectories there and equally diverse was the role of the past. Whereas in the Rhineland Middle Neolithic cultures obviously avoided it, in Kuyavia they referred to it and this tendency grew through time, leading to an unprecedented proliferation of memory practices during the Brześć Kujawski Culture.
