Abstract: The ground flash density in Japanese winter thunderstorm area was estimated based on the registration of the CIGRE 500 Hz lightning flash counter.It had been known that the thunderstorm days in winter at this area are not so less compared with summer, but in this study, it was clarified that the extremely low ground flash density per thunderstorm day is one of the remarkable features of winter thunderstorm.The extremely high flash incidence to tall structures despite the small ground flash density is another characteristic of winter thunderstorm.This indicates that the small value of ground flash density in winter can not be disregarded from the viewpoint of lightning protection of tall structures such as power transmission lines.
