Women, Peace, and Security and LGBTI Rights

Abstract: While United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and its subsequent resolutions have galvanized worldwide efforts to address the challenges women face in conflict and post-conflict settings, it has lacked a holistic approach to gender. The interpretation of gender under the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda is outdated, binary, and heteronormative. This narrow approach has overlooked the experiences of lesbians, bisexual women, transgender, and intersex (LBTI) people in conflict and disaster settings, failing to capture threats and/or create tailored responses to meet survivors’ needs.
