Abstract: The development of cancer staging programs to prognosticate survival has been the primary role of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). Recent advances in our understanding of prostate cancer biology have allowed for improved risk assessments. Future publications by the UICC and the AJCC must go beyond clinical staging to include risk assessment tools that incorporate additional important prognostic variables for a variety of outcomes.
