Abstract: A novel class of genetically encoded fluorescent sensors for detecting opioid molecules is reported by Kayla E. Kroning and Wenjing Wang in their Research Article on page 13358. These opioid sensors are called SPOTIT (single-chain protein-based opioid transmission indicator tool). Upon detecting opioids, SPOTIT is activated and generates a persistent green fluorescence mark for image analysis. SPOTIT will potentially be useful for high-throughput screening of opioids in cell cultures and cellular resolution detection of opioids in vivo.
