Hydrothermal processing in biorefineries a case study of the environmental performence

Year: 2005
Type: article
Abstract: Hydrothermal processes are possible attractive components for biorefineries, for converting different biomass streams into a range of products. This study investigates the environmental performance of a hydrothermal process plant in Carthage, Missouri under development by Changing World Technologies (CWT).The plant converts the refuse from Butterball Turkey production into diesel oil, fertilizer products and carbon. The CWT process is essentially a closed system with few emissions, avoiding odor problems from the handling and giving products free from pathogens.Life Cycle Assessment has been used to investigate the overall environmental performance of the process and the performance of this process is discussed in comparison to other process routes to give the same products.
