Abstract: This background paper assesses the consequences of civil war in Africa and provides\nrecommendations on how to deal with these consequences. Historically, Africa has had a\nhigh prevalence of conflict but during the last decade the continent has seen the termination\nof a number of civil wars. Since a high proportion of peace settlements break down it is\nimportant to understand the challenges post-conflict societies face. The recommendations\nsuggest that appropriate outside assistance and internal reform can strengthen the peace in\npost-conflict countries. This is Africa’s opportunity to break out of the conflict trap.
