Rayleigh-Benard Convection: A Negentropic Approach
Year: 2001
Type: preprint
Abstract: For the negentropic formulation of the second law of thermodynamics, the emergence of organization as it occurs in self-organizing phenomena, represents the transition from an entropic to a negentropic universe. In order to apply this criterion to the emergence of organization associated to the transition conduction-convection found in fluids heated from below, the Rayleigh-Benard universe was modeled as a series of coupled reversible Carnot’s engines. The first result produced by this model is represented by the fact that the so-coupled engines can access supra-Carnot efficiencies. The application of the negentropic criterion to the thus modeled Rayleigh-Benard universe produced an expression for the efficiency operating at the critical point at which organization emerges. This expression was put to the use with the experimental data of Schmidt and Milverton and Schmidt and Saunders. The results of this test are found to be in agreement with the negentropic paradigm.
