Entre altos e baixos: dinâmicas da violência letal no Espírito Santo e Minas Gerais entre os anos 2000 e 2020

Abstract: The present article aims to discuss the dynamics of violent lethality, especially among youths, in the Brazilian states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. From quantitative data and results of qualitative field research carried out by the authors and their peers, this article discusses the decrease in intentional violent deaths in the two states in the past decade, the still punctual influence of criminal factions from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with a greater centrality in the local dynamics of violent rivalries and armed conflicts, and the intense increase in police lethality in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Finally, the article initiates a discussion on the different effects of the covid-19 pandemic in the homicide numbers of both states, which showed a significant increase in Espírito Santo but maintained the decreasing trend of previous years in Minas Gerais.
